The Baltic Way - Hiking at Stevens Klint
06/09/2017
Despite the first notes of the autumn cold, the start of September in Copenhagen if often very summery. These days start with a crispy and cold air mist and cold morning, and evolve into a beautiful sunny afternoon. So wa last weekend for me and my family, when we got up we just had to make waffles and warm coffee, and by the time we were finished with our breakfast the su stood high and the spirits were just at high and bright. Kids were urging to go outside, and, instead of a usual walk or a bike trip , we decided to take a longer trip to Stevens Klint, which lays appx. 1 hour drive South from Dragør
This place is truly historic on severai levels. It is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List because the explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs lies hidden in the cliff 65, 5 mln years ago.
It is also a place where a great battle og Køge bay was faught between Danmark and Sweden took place. Famous Danish general Niels Juel defeated the superior Swedish navy in 1677 in Scanian war 1676-1679.

ØIt is a home of Stevn lighthouse and Øjerup Old Church was built of chalk ashlar c.1250-1300. Back then, it stood at a safe distance from the cliff. According to the legend, the church moves a cock-stride inland each Christmas night; but this did not suffice to avoid disaster: in 1928, the chancel and part of the cemetery plunged into the sea as a result of the ravages of time on the cliff. For security reasons, it had already been closed in 1910.
This was the most beautiful activity we could have done together with kids. On the top of all the place has a cozy little shop with souvenirs and a restaurant, and they arrange guided tours for schools.
